The Repeats - Highlighting What Still Works In 2021
1.BrainPop
BrainPop offers accessible, engaging lessons for elementary and middle school learners. Topics range from STEM to arts, music, and health, and modules include videos, related reading, and assessments to encourage engagement. They also offer resources for educators and parents, like pacing guides for helping students as they adjust to remote education.
2. CodeAcademy
CodeAcademy began almost 10 years ago as a free platform for learning how to code. Today, they still provide students with free coding courses. The CodeAcademy course catalog includes specific subjects such as web development, data science, and game development. It covers languages including HTML & CSS, Python, SQL, Ruby, PHP, Go, Swift, and more.
3. Duolingo
The Duolingo app brings a personalized, fun approach to learning languages. As students continue to use the app, the lessons and exercises become more tailored to their learning style. Quizzes and rewards in the app help keep students motivated and improving.
4. Fiveable
Fiveable is a modern, engaging resource specifically for AP courses. Educators from across the country share free lessons and study guides for 15+ AP courses, from history and social science to STEM to language.
5. iD Tech
iD Tech is the world leader in tech education experiences, and they’re still offering a suite of virtual camps. Virtual Tech Camps are an excellent way to provide students with structured skill-building to keep them engaged and learning.
6. Mindful.org
Mindful.org contains dozens of mindfulness and meditation exercises for students, families, and teachers to incorporate into their learning at-home routines. It’s a great resource for beginners and more experienced practitioners alike.
7. Khan Academy
Khan Academy provides free online lessons for students of every age and grade level. Their video modules are particularly helpful for visual learners and can be accessed at any time. Khan covers STEM, arts, and humanities, and also extends to standardized test preparation.
The New Stuff - Kick 2021 Learning Into Overdrive
1. Canvas
Canvas is an online learning management platform. Usage has exploded as COVID pushes schools to adapt to remote learning. For parents, you should be aware that the system allows you to see what assignments your kids need to do, and provides data metrics for administrators to use for performance improvements.
2. Edmodo
Edmodo is another learning management software that ties together a lot of cumbersome tasks for teachers - sending messages, sharing assignments, tracking grades, and more. Similar to Canvas, parents should be aware that you can get your own login to keep your student on track!
3. Kahoot
Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform often used in the classroom as a fun way to quiz students while encouraging healthy competition. Although it was launched in 2013, it’s ability to capture attention in the remote classroom has made it a popular 2020 learning tool. If you hear your kid talking about a Kahoot quiz, now you’ll know what they mean!
4. Matific
Matific provides free online K-6 math activities and games that are linked to content from the most popular math textbooks. Although it is UK focused, math students around the world can benefit from free math activities with a strong learning pedagogy. It’s a great resource for parents looking to help their student reinforce a specific concept - and if your student gets stuck, they can always use Yup!

Outschool offers small-group classes from home. Classes range from typical school courses to life skills, games (escape rooms is a particularly popular course), and more! Outschool is a fantastic option for parents looking to offer extracurricular activities to their students at home.
