About Yup For Schools

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Yup screen tutors? k

All Yup tutors undergo a rigorous application process that includes subject exams to test content knowledge, a teaching exam to assess a tutor’s ability to teach concepts effectively, and a working trial period. During this working trial period, tutors receive regular evaluations from our Academics Team and a thorough onboarding on our teaching fundamentals and policies. Only 5% of applicants successfully become Yup tutors.

How does Yup make sure that students aren’t using Yup to cheat? k

If a Yup tutor notices at any point that a student is working on a graded closed-book assessment, they will not move forward with the session, flag the student, and note the behavior to our Tutor Quality Managers. Compared to many other tutoring apps out there, it’s very difficult to use Yup for cheating because our tutors don’t give away answers. Instead, they encourage students to show their work and engage fully to find solutions to problems.

How can Yup help educators? k

Teachers are stretched thin and can’t always provide each student with one-on-one attention. Yup tutors are always available to help students, no matter the time of day. Our tutors help reduce teacher stress by supporting their workload, unlocking more time for them to focus on lesson planning and in-depth student coaching.

How should teachers instruct their students to use Yup? k

In light of school closures due to COVID-19, we recommend schools and teachers encourage their students to use Yup as a supplement to practice problems, take-home packets, and to dive deeper into specific math concepts. Our school partners currently using Yup are experiencing the benefits of providing their students with immediate, 24/7 math support.

How do Yup tutors supplement their teaching in sessions? k

Our tutors make use of several in-app tools while instructing students, including secure texting, photo-sharing, and a live virtual whiteboard. Tutors can also share content cards that concisely outline key concepts, definitions, and formulas. They may also refer students to free to access trusted partners such as Desmos, a program for showing multiple representations of functions.

What is average student Yup usage? k

This varies student to student, but we typically see engaged students using Yup twice per week for 30 minutes each session. Some students have more than two sessions in one day and other more infrequent users tend to use Yup to prepare before a big test. Our dashboard for schools can show live usage metrics to teachers and administrators.

If a school is signing up for Yup, do parents need to sign waivers? k

Every school contract is different and for those schools where this is a requirement, we are happy to provide virtual waivers to facilitate the approval process.

What updates from Yup can I expect as a teacher or school administrator? k

All schools and districts are provided with access to a dashboard showing student usage, tutoring sessions transcripts, and tutor feedback. The dashboard can be accessed anytime from a teacher or administrator’s desktop. School administrators also receive quarterly updates on student progress and Yup usage.

What is the cancellation process? k

School contracts are on a year by year basis and require at least 30 days notice prior to cancellation. Yup for Schools provides discounted pilot programs to see if we are a good fit for your school and students.

Our teaching fundamentals were created by the Yup Academics Team in conjunction with outside education experts.

How can Yup help schools? k

Schools using Yup have access to a dashboard of student usage and transcripts of all tutoring sessions. These insights help teachers identify where they can supplement their lessons and individual student learning.

What is Yup’s approach to instruction? k

Our tutors teach according to the NCTM’s Mathematics Teaching Practices. These methods and principles ensure that tutors use purposeful questions to elicit visible student thinking. Once thinking is made visible, the tutor can identify any gaps in knowledge and help the student build upon what they already know. When Tutor Quality Managers review sessions, they score them with a rigorous rubric borrowing from George Polya’s landmark instructional text How to Solve It.

What does a standard Yup session look like? k

Depending on the student’s familiarity with Yup and what they need help in, typical sessions range from 20 minutes to a full hour. Something that sets Yup apart from other tutoring providers and resources is that our tutors stick with students for as long as they need. Our goal is not only for students to get through their problems, but to ensure they learn the concepts behind the problems.

Can Yup be used by students with learning differences/disabilities? k

Our tutors are not specifically trained to work with students with learning differences/disabilities. However, we do serve many students with these needs and they benefit from the qualities unique to Yup. These qualities include being able to learn at their own pace, reduced anxiety commonly attributed to in-person tutoring, and the ability to reread and revisit previous sessions.

What devices support Yup? k

Yup can be downloaded on any iOS, Android, or tablet device that supports apps from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Unfortunately, Yup is currently not available on desktop and is not optimized for Google Chromebooks, but Google is working to make all apps work on this device.
