Below is an equation for a vertical hyperbola in general conic form as well as a graph. As you can see, both x and y terms are squared and one of them is negative.

To form a horizontal hyperbola, the y term must be negative and the coordinates would generally switch around; the vertices would be (h - a, k) and (h + a, k), for example.
